Madras fabric originated in the Madras region of India (now Chennai). It spread globally through trade by the British East India Company. One company official, Elihu Yale, donated Madras textiles and goods to a school. That school was later renamed Yale University in his honor, marking Madras fabric’s entry into the U.S.

Wealthy Americans began wearing Madras shirts while traveling to tropical climates. Eventually, they adopted the style into their daily wardrobes. Ivy League students, known for their refined yet relaxed taste, quickly embraced Madras. It soon became a symbol of Ivy style—blending heritage, worldliness, and effortless sophistication.
